BA(Hons) Fine Art, NEWI, Wrexham

I’ve been a Self-Employed  Sculptor/ Woodcarver  since 1988 initially producing architectural/reproduction woodcarvings for furniture and cabinetmakers with some small wildlife sculpture.  Gradually commissions for sculpture overtook the more traditional work to the point where sculpture became the primary function of the business.  In 2000 I did an Access course at Yale College going on to North Wales School of Art from where I Graduated with BA(Hons) in Fine Art in 2005. Although most of my work is to commission I also carry out workshops and residencies for schools and community projects.

Although working to commission can be interesting and, at times, quite challenging it can also be very prescriptive. On the plus side I have been given the opportunity produce work I wanted to make but which would have been too expensive to make on spec. I’ve also been asked to do things I may never have even thought of doing which appeals to my desire for variety and the need to extend my knowledge and experience. The down side can sometimes result from the need to compromise between the sculpture I would like to produce and the limitations imposed by the requirements of the commissioning body.

.My non-commissioned work tends to be quite diverse. I like variety and welcome any opportunity to add to my skills bank. I enjoy working with a range of materials , techniques and styles.

Publications
I have had two articles published in Woodcarving magazine, (issues 23, Jan/Feb.96 & 30, Oct.96) one of which, on the construction of the Kronospan Dragon has subsequently been reproduced in the book ‘Understanding Woodcarving’ which is available from GMC Publications .

One of my sculptures, “The Hand” at The Hand Hotel, Llanarmon DC is featured in the book Coetir Clwyd/O’R Coed	2007 .

In 2002 a photograph of my sculpture "Jabberwocky" was used as the front cover illustration for a book produced by the Lewis Carroll Society of Canada. (Jabberland, a waffle through the wiffly wood of Jabberwocky lookalikes)
